Lecture on the position of Spain within the American Revolution

As part of the International Conference Prosopography – Approaches, Texts and Technologies that took place at the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts on 24-25 September 2026, I gave a lecture titled “Friends or Foes? Spain and the American Revolution”, co-sponsored by ZRC-SAZU and the Spanish Embassy. This lecture took the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence as an ideal occasion to shed light on Spain’s role in the American Revolution from a global perspective (1775-1883). It did so by using a prosopographical approach, given that Spanish involvement in the War was not simply a matter of state policy but rather a network of individuals—ministers, diplomats, military officers, merchants, financiers, governors, administrators, translators, intermediaries, and intellectuals—who connected Spain with the Viceroyalty of New Spain, particularly Cuba and Louisiana, with France and the emerging United States.
